How to Beat the Goalie: Edition 10 3/20

Welcome to the tenth edition of 'How to Beat the Goalie' on Fang Faction. The Nashville Predators take on the Edmonton Oilers for the final time this season Tuesday night. This will be the first time there will be a 'How to Beat the Goalie' on the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers' goalies are Devan Dubnyk and, the most difficult name to spell, Nikolai Khabibulin.

Edition 10: Edmonton Oilers Goalies, Devan Dubnyk and Nikolai Khabibulin

Devan Dubnyk is the projected starting goalie going into this game. The Edmonton Oilers have given him the start in the last four games. Nikolai Khabibulin hasn't received the start since March 10. Khabibulin has received two starts against Nashville this season, while Dubnyk has received only one.


6'5" Devan Dubnyk is from Saskatchewan Devan Dubnyk is the Fang Faction projected starting goalie Tuesday night. Dubnyk hasn't had a good season, but neither has the Edmonton Oilers. He just isn't the right guy, yet. Dubnyk has started the last four games for the Oilers, including Coyotes, Flames, Blue Jackets and Sharks. His last game was against the Phoenix Coyotes, where he received the overtime loss in a 2-3 shootout loss. Dubnyk stopped 40 of 42 shots. Here is how the Nashville Predators will score on him.

• Forehand, Backhand in Shootout: Nashville will score on Devan Dubnyk on the shootout by dekeing and going forehand-backhand, blocker side. All right hand shooters will have to try this move.

• Glove Side: I could honestly show you videos and videos of goals scored on Dubnyk, glove side. He is truly awful glove side.

Nikolai Khabibulin should be getting the night off for the fifth straight game. Khabibulin, 39, has seen the NHL transform. He has played with the original Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks and currently the Edmonton Oilers since 1994. Khabibulin will have just one more year left on his contract after this season. He should definitely retire once his contract with the Oilers is up. 

Nikolai Khabibulin's record in his last five starts is 0-3-2. The last time Khabibulin started was against the Colorado Avalanche, where he lost in a shootout, 3-2. Here is how the Nashville Predators will score on him, if he was to play.

• Move Right to Left: When on break-aways, Nashville should make Nikolai move from right left. The left side of the net will be open.

• Traffic In Front: The Predators need to put people in front of Khabibulin, screening him, as shots from the point come reigning in.
