Welcome back to the Weekend Update. This is where I will fill you in on the NHL standings as well as provide you with videos from around the world of hockey. It's been a fun week of hockey, the first full week of the season, so let's get started.
Here are your NHL standings. The Chicago Blackhawks are scary. Very scary.
To start off, let's go back to the beginning of the week. On Monday, the St. Louis Blues defeated the Nashville Predators in a shootout. The Preds were held scoreless in the shootout as the Blues picked up the extra point. Why did this happen? Maybe one reason is that St. Louis goaltender Brian Elliot got a little reminder on what the Nashville Predators shooters tend to do in the shootout, or maybe he played an air hockey game.
Our next video is also from a Monday game. Detroit visited Columbus after taking a beatdown from the St. Louis Blues. The nationaly televised game was tight all the way through and ended up in a shootout. When Damien Brunner had a chance to grab the extra point for Detroit, he didn't disappoint. Incredibly, he kept the puck moving forward the entire time.
Out to the desert we go where former Predator Steve Sullivan is still playing hockey. Pretty good hockey, too. Wedensday night, the Phoenix Coyotes hosted the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Jackets took the lead in the second period, but Sully scored to tie it up, and then added two more goals in the third period to give Phoenix the lead plus some insurance.
This is goal and the celebration that broke Twitter this week. It comes from Alberta and a nineteen year old Russian. The Edmonton Oilers were trailing the LA Kings in the dying seconds. The Oilers thought they had tied the game, but a goalie interference call wiped out the goal and the home crowd didn't exactly agree. Trash rained down from the seats in Rexall Place, but what happened next made everyone forget about the previous no goal. Rookie Nail Yakupov showed off his hand-eye coordination when he batted a Taylor Hall rebound in the goal past Jonathan Quick. The ensuing celebration was controversial, but you have to love the raw excitement from Yakupov after his first big-time NHL goal.
Last but not least, we have a goalie fight! The Syracuse Crunch and the St. John's Ice Caps of the American Hockey League were in a tight game in the second period, when a fight broke out in the corner. Goalies Dustin Tokarski and Eddie Pasquale decided to join in the action, and the rest is history.
Make sure to check back next week for the next edition of the Weekend Update.
